Guild Bay News Rising Interns Clinch Journalism Awards

Former students of the 2017 Bay News Rising program won several awards at the Oct. 21 Journalism Association of Community Colleges Northern California conference in Cupertino, Calif.

Bethany Lee, of City College of San Francisco (CCSF) placed fourth in the Feature Photo category and won an honorable mention in the Feature Story category.

“JACC is a great time to come together with other community colleges and witness the passion of student publications,” Lee said.

Gabriela Reni, also of CCSF, placed fourth in the News Photo category.

From Laney College, Brian Howey placed first in the Feature Story and Feature Photo categories, and won second place in the On-The-Spot Newswriting category.

San Francisco State University journalism student Alena Naiden attended the conference and spoke in a panel discussion about her experience transferring from a community college to a four-year university.

She also recounted her experiences at two internships (including Bay News Rising) in a second panel discussion on getting-and making the most of-a journalism internship.
